"This is Sigmund, the fortress of the west, located in the foothills of the Dark Mountain Range. A military super stronghold and an airship dock... As long as this place is functional, Draven will have a virtually unlimited supply of troops to attack you with... It is built into the side of a mountain, equipped with the standard barriers and the like. It is virtually impenetrable to both land and aerial attack..." -- The traitor Vincent

Sigmund is one of the Five Fortresses of the Crimson Empire. It is located in the central western region of the Dark Continent.

Structure

The fortress Sigmund is essentially built into two mountains. Several large structures are constructed in the small valley between the two, and many corridors dig deep into the mountains on the north and south side as well. The north and south walls are essentially the mountains themselves, steep, unscalable, and rising higher than even the tallest structure in the valley itself. The west and east walls, which contain the front and back gates respectively, are largely part of the slopes of the mountains as well, with additional stone walls built up to completely encase the central structures.

History

In chapter 8, Vincent, the traitor to the Crimson Empire, infiltrates the fortress and uses alchemy to open a huge hole through the side of the northern mountain into the corridors of the fortress, allowing the forces of the Grey Empire to invade and eventually take the fortress. General Hector of the Crimson Empire was killed in the assult by Vincent's own golden sniper rifle.

After the fall of the Grey Empire, the fortress was reclaimed by its original owners, the Dark Empire.
