Background
Midna was once the princess and ruler of the city of Asgarnia. Until the Seven-Hour War, her actions allowed the city to prosper. Shortly after the war and Asgarnia's defeat, she was confronted by the dark sorcerer Damien Roth. He demanded the throne from her, but she denied him. In retaliation Damien placed a curse on Midna, transforming her into an imp-like creature. Damien took the throne by force and evicted her.
Ever since then, she had searched for a cohort she could use to her advantage so she could reclaim the throne. Less than a week after the events, she was confronted by the spirit form of Alex, who approached her, asking for resurrection. Midna obliged, and Alex was drawn into her deal without suspecting much.
Chapter 11
Midna is introduced as the being a disembodied Alex must consult in order to be returned to the living world. However, Midna wanted something in exchange. Seeing a ripe young man she could use as a tool, she drafted him into the fight to reclaim her throne. Unfortunately, Alex was less than ready for Damien's immense a power, a mistake that almost cost him his life. After this horrible defeat, Midna soon grew more sentimental towards the young man, and felt genuine concern for who she had selfishly implemented for her own gains. Both her and Alex convinced that he could not confront Damien in his current state, she opened her teachings of magic up to Alex, who picked up on the subject easily. With a renewed sense of confidence and power, the two stormed the Kandarinian citadel with massive numbers of rebels behind them. Upon confrontation with Damien, Midna was captured and threatened to be banished to the Borderworld. Thankfully, Alex was capable of overpowering Damien, if only temporarily. Regardless, Midna looked upon Alex with new feelings of respect and gratitude. These feelings Midna kept hidden from Alex for reasons unknown, until towards the end of the chapter when Alex was attacked and bitten by a poison headcrab. Embracing her new friend, she proclaimed her feelings for him.
Subsequent Confrontations with Damien
Now with the assistance of Alex, she and him infiltrated the Kandarinian citadel in the center of Asgarnia, hoping to get even with Damien. Unfortunately, his and Alex's power were gravely mismatched, allowing Damien to easily overpower the rebel. Once again near death, Midna soon began to feel genuine concern for the poor man she had drafted into her plan. Thankfully, Alex survived, lifting Midna's sullen spirits. Midna realized that Alex was too weak at this state to confront Damien, and so she began her training of Alex in the magical arts. Almost by a stroke of luck, Alex soon showed adeptness in fire magic, Damien's weakness. Now angrier than ever at Damien, the two led a massive assault on the Kandarinian citadel accompanying large ranks of Asgarnian rebels. Confronting Damien once again, this time Alex was capable of defeating the magical lord, though not permanently. The curse still standing, Midna and Alex now continue their search for Damien, who had escaped after defeat.
Relationship with Alex
It is shown that Midna harbors feelings for Alex, greatly appreciating the help the rebel had reclaiming her throne. On more than one occasion she has tried to tell the rebel how she feels. However, whenever she attempts, she is often interrupted by another cataclysm or an outsider approaching.
Immediately after Alex was bitten by a poison headcrab in the Mining District, she became terrified of losing him. Embracing him and on the verge of tears, she admitted her love for him. However, Alex was at this point mostly unconscious and did not hear her.
Abilities
Despite her diminished state, Midna still possesses powers vital to Alex. These powers include:
- A shadow cloak, cast on the P.C.S. that allows Alex to become invisible in shadow, though it will not operate in the light.
- Telekinetic abilities, using a large hand emerging from her head (what also appears to be hair when not in use) to grab and hurl things.
- Dimensional portals, allowing Midna to create a portal at one point, and another at a different location, allowing instant travel. However, she has not yet used this power, perhaps because it might be stressful on the body to use it.
- Levitation, as she often does to move around.
- The ability to hide within someone's shadow to conceal herself, and to appear at will to the person whose shadow she is hiding in.
